Coming straight from the Mediterranean regions, calendula is a plant with beautiful orange flowers that bloom from April to December. Its oil, or rather its oily macerate (since it does not contain lipids), is therefore obtained by the maceration of its flowers in vegetable oil. After a few days, the macerate is filtered and it is at this moment that we obtain an oil rich in active ingredients! Moreover, its medicinal benefits have been known since the Middle Ages: it was prescribed in particular to soothe insect bites or snake bites. Little wonder then that its virtues are still claimed today. But what exactly are they? We asked our questions to Didier Thevenin, Brand Advocate at Melvita.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CALENDULA OIL FOR THE SKIN?
As we said before, calendula oil is known above all for its
soothing and calming properties. With it, skin that is sensitive , irritated or
even reddened by the sun (in other words, flaunting sunburn ) will be instantly
soothed. “But that's not all,” says the expert. Naturally rich in faradiol,
this vegetable oilrelieves skin inflammation of all kinds. Thanks to the
presence of flavonoids, this oily macerate also acts as a powerful antioxidant
against free radicals and thus protects against cell degeneration. In addition,
these active ingredients can boost the regeneration of skin cells and
accelerate the healing process. Finally, its high oleic acid content provides
deep hydration of the layers of the skin. As for the fatty acids it contains,
they help restore suppleness and elasticity to the skin. An oil that is so
good!
HOW TO PROPERLY USE CALENDULA OIL?
If this oil does not present any contraindication to daily
use, there is no need to abuse it for all that. Indeed, the expert specifies
that it applies when necessary. “A bit like an SOS oil,” he explains. Most ?
All skin types can benefit from it, in particular sensitive, irritated,
overheated skin ... It is even “appreciated for baby care. But few brands have
carried out tests to sell it to this target, ”says the expert. Small exception
perhaps for oily skin (and again) because of its viscous texture although not
comedogenic. "Be careful, however, warns the expert: it is a naturally
tinted oil which can give a little color to the skin".
On the application side, Didier Thevenin recommends a very
specific routine: “on a perfectly cleansed face, spray floral water (with
orange blossom for example) and leave the skin damp. Apply 1 or 2 drops of
calendula oil with your fingertips on the area to be treated. The moist skin
will allow the oil to penetrate more easily. ". In addition, we favor an
application in the evening to soothe irritated skin, the action will be all the
more lasting. You can also mix a drop of calendula with your face moisturizer.
Finally, if you feel like a little DIY recipe, calendula oil goes very well
with argan oil. Very gentle, they are quite complementary and work in synergy.
HOW TO CHOOSE IT WELL?
“Above all, this calendula oil must be organic! », Exclaims
the expert. That is to say labeled by one of the existing organic cosmetic labels.
Then, it is vital to read the ingredients carefully: "it should only
include the name of the vegetable oil used for maceration, the name of the
plant (calendula) and possibly tocopherol ( vitamin E ) in very small
quantities. to avoid oxidation (less than 1%) ”, he concludes. Now that we know
everything about this somewhat miracle vegetable oil for our skin, we run to
get one to treat our ailments (or in prevention)!
